Good day homeowners.  My name is Rand Rodriguez, and I am the lead for the Landscaping Committee for our HOA.  As such, I will be overseeing the HOA landscaping contract for the community and also assisting homeowners on their landscaping issues.  In addition to HOA landscaping requirements, I am also a Bexar County Master Gardener Intern and student of Horticulture at Palo Alto College.  While that alone doesn’t mean I can answer all of your questions, I do know those who can!

Want to know more about how to deal with your landscaping issues?

On Saturday 10 October, we will be having experts from the Bexar County Master Gardeners here at our Pavillion to answer your questions!

Want to know more about plants, how do deal with weeds, what fertilizer to use?  The Bexar County Master Gardeners will be at our pavillion for 2 hours (Time to be posted in the next update) to answer your gardening questions.  They are your Go-To experts on gardening in Bexar County!  This will be part of a 3 phase program designed to help you with your landscape questions.

Phase I:  Landscape Clinic 10 October Time TBD Location:  Pool Pavillion

Bexar County Master Gardeners will be available to answer your gardening questions during this 2-hour time frame.  You do not have to stay the 2 hours, but you may come with your questions and get immediate answers.  Questions about soil, fertilizer, grass, plants will be answered per Texas A&M Agrilife extension guidelines for Bexar County.

Phase II. Gardening Workshop:  Date/Time TBD  Location: TBD

This 2-hour workshop is designed to give homeowners more detailed information on creating a resilient landscape that stands up to our region’s unique growing conditions, as well as proven techniques for basic lawn and landscape care.  There will be multiple classes given and SAWS irrigation experts will be there to answer your irrigation questions.  Once you completed this phase, you are now eligible to sign up for Phase III, Landscape Reviews.

Phase III:  Landscape Reviews.  Per Homeowner Request.

Per your request, two Bexar County Master Gardners will come to your home to view your lot and provide on the spot recommendations on your landscape issues.  SAWS will also come out and check your irrigation system for free!  In order to obtain this visit, you must have attended and signed up at Phase II.

How to attract and care for Hummingbirds:  Hummingbirds

Let’s bring pollinators back to our HOA!  

For maximum monarch + hummingbird traffic:

• Plant Gregg’s Mistflower in clusters of 3–5 for butterfly density. (Plant in Sun-Will grow 4-5 feet wide and 3 feet tall)
• Add Turk’s Cap for shade areas and nonstop hummingbird activity.  (Plant in partial sun areas and will grow to 5-6′ high and 4-5 feet wide)
• Use Flame Acanthus in hot, dry spots — peak bloom aligns with fall monarch migration.  (Plant in full sun and it will grow from 4-5′ tall and 3-4 feet wide)
• Mix in Esperanza for long-season nectar and bright color. (Plant in full sun and this bush will grow up to 7-8 feet tall and just about as wide).

Bloom coverage across seasons:

• Spring: Gregg’s Mistflower
• Summer: Salvia, Turk’s Cap, Esperanza, Gregg’s Mistflower
• Fall (migration peak): Flame Acanthus, Gregg’s Mistflower, Turk’s Cap, Esperanza

Water needs: All four are drought-tough once established — ideal for Central Texas heat.
